History of the Department

Department of Zoology was commissioned in 1958 under the supervision of the Sri.V.B.R.K. Chowdary, the first member and the Head of the Department. Initially it was designated as the Department of Natural Sciences.

The Department had only two staff members during the inaugural year. The second member was Mrs.K.Krishna Kumari who taught Botony. In 1961, Sri.L.Janaki Ramayya and Sri.K.Venkata Rao joined as Lecturers. In 1965, B.Sc. course with Zoology, Botony and Chemistry was started.In the same year Sri.A.Seetaramaiah and Sri. N.Bapa Rao joined as Lecturers. In 1967 Sri. K.Hanumantha Rao and Sri. G.Suryanarayana joined in the service.

In the same year Department of Natural Sciences was bifurcated into Departments of Zoology and Botony. Later Sri.V. Krishna Murthy, Smt.M.Anantha Lakshmi, Sri.M.Poornachandra Rao, Sri.V.Ranga Rao, Sri.K.Sreeramulu, Sri.K.Ramesh babu, Smt.P.Hilda Margaret , Smt.K.Sailaja and Dr.L.Cyril Arun Kumar Joined in the department in subsequent years.
Principals from the Department: The following faculty members retired as the Principals.
1.Sri. V.B.R.K. Chowdary (1991 – 1993)
2.Sri. A. Seetharamaiah (1999 – 2000)
3.Smt.M.Anantha Lakshmi (2003 - 2004) 

Research Facilities and ongoing Projects and Research:
Research is in full swing as ANU selected Dr L.Cyril.Arun Kumar as a Research Supervisor. Convinced with the need to establish Research Lab, the management gave priority and the result is a well established Research Lab, where research scholars pursue their work without any hurdles. In a short period of 5 to 6 years 2 M.Phils and 02 Ph.D were produced. 01 Scholar submitted Synopsis. 03 scholars are pursuing their Doctoral degree.


MINOR RESEACH PROJECTS SANCTIONED TO THE DEPARTMENT:
Two minor Research projects were sanctioned to the Zoology Department by the UGC.

1. Establishment of Vermiculture and Vermi compost unit for production of organic fertilizer at low cost using Agro-Industrial wastes.

This Project was sanctioned to Sri K.Sreeramulu and it was completed.

2. Evaluation of toxicity of heavy metals mercury and chromium to fresh water fishes Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala.


Activities:
The Department organized Three National Seminars, One Workshop for College Teachers, Two Inter Collegiate Paper Presentation Competitions for College Students. We regularly conduct Student Seminars, Quiz, Buzz, Group Discussions, and Remedial Classes for our Students. Field Trips also arranged for our Students.

1. Sustainable and Eco-friendly Aquaculture –Sponsored by UGC
2. Biodiversity Conservation and Environmental Biotechnology – sponsored by NBA &DBT, Govt. of India
3. Impact of Biotechnology on the sustainability of the Environment –


Work Shop:
The Dept. of Zoology organized a work shop on “Molecular Biology, Immunology and Fermentation Technology” (In association with Centre for Biotechnology, ANU) for college teachers on 14th & 15th December 2005.


POPULAR LECTURES:
The Department organized Three Popular Lectures in Biotechnology by inviting eminent Scientists. This program was sponsored by DBT of Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India to popularize the Biotechnology among the School Children, College Students and Common people.


Consultancy:
Department of Zoology offers Free Consultancy Services to Aqua Farmers in around Tenali since many years.

Other Information:
• Sri.K.Sreeramulu received A.P.State Best Teacher Award in 2010 from the Govt. of A.P.
• Sri K Sreeramulu authored many text books and he is the co-author of Zoology Text Book of BSc published by Telugu Academy, Hyderabad.
• Dr .L.Cyril Arun Kumar contributed more than 20 research articles to National/ international journals
• Sri. K. Sreeamulu has been the Controller of Examinations ever since the institution gained autonomous status.
• Dr.L.Cyril Arun Kumar served as Additional Controller of Examinations for 7Years.
• Dr.L.Cyril Arun Kumar is presently the Coordinator IQAC of the College.
• Dr.l.Cyril Arun Kumar, Received A.P.State Best Teacher Award I 2014 from the Govt. of A.P.
